Offre de post doc, Université Picardie

Our group (based at the University of Picardy Jules Verne in Amiens, France) studies neurovegetative functions during sleep in neonates. We study the systems controlling thermal, hypnic, nutritional and ventilatory functions and indeed the dysfunctions which characterize premature infants. Our research is performed in Department of Paediatrics at Amiens University Hospital, in close collaboration with medical and paramedical staff. This integrated physiology approach makes it possible to better understand certain vital dysfunctions which occur during certain behavioural states or when faced with environmental challenges (ambient temperature, the oxygen concentration of the ambient air, etc.), nutritional changes and exposure to therapeutic agents (e.g. caffeine) or tobacco. This research has fundamental, applied and clinical repercussions.

A post-doctoral position is available as part of a research project funded by the Picardy Regional Council. It involves studying the relationship between the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and gastro-oesophageal reflux (GER) during sleep in babies (from premature infants to 2-year-olds). There will be a special focus on the influence of tobacco exposure (in utero or during early life).

The successful applicant will take part in the investigation of infants in the Department of Paediatrics at Amiens University Hospital using 12-hr polysomnography (EEG, ECG, respiratory signals…) and pH measurement, etc. A major part of the work will concern the processing of the various physiological measurements (sleep score, heart rate variability, reflux episodes, apnoea episodes), data analysis and statistics (SAS Statview).

The candidate should have a PhD in biomedical research (human physiology, perinatality, sleep and neurovegetative functions). The position requires knowledge of sleep, cardiac, digestive and respiratory physiology in human neonates and skill in the associated measurement, data analysis and statistical techniques. Experience in a hospital environment is desirable. The position will run for 1 year from September 1st, 2008.

Duration of the contract: 1 year

Remuneration: around 1700 euros per month
